After Mandatory Telecommuting: Many Dogs Experience Separation Anxiety

At the height of the pandemic, many people are adopting pets. Dogs are definitely one of the most coveted pets. For the past two years, most of them have been at home 24 hours a day, with their owners, due to incarceration. Never used to being alone, many of these dogs suffer from severe anxiety when their owners leave the house.

This is the observation made by -Chanel -Brosseau, who owns -Chenil -Hurle-Vent, in -Saint-Bernard–de-Lacolle, for five years.

Founded in 1992 by the previous owner, -Chenil -Hurle-Vent welcomes about twenty dogs at a time, mostly large breed dogs, and this, 12 months a year.

“-We sometimes receive dogs from the police or customs, determined -MME – Brusheau. Recently, we had a dog find meat in luggage at Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau airport. »

We offer a boarding service for long stays, but also for one or two nights, for people going away for the weekend or on vacation, for example.

problem

Chanel-Brosseau anticipated the problem she is currently facing with the many dogs she keeps, and this, from the start of the pandemic.

“We work with dogs every day and we know how their brains work,” he said. We saw it from the beginning. People get dogs and they are always at home. There they start again, but their dogs are not used to being with strangers or other dogs. This can cause a lot of anxiety because they are not used to being apart from their owner. »

Refusal

As many people buy dogs, the need to increase kennels like -Hurle-Vent.

“-We have to refuse about twenty requests a week, explained -MME – Brusheau. Among these refusals, there were five or six that we did not get after their mandatory 24-hour test, because the dogs were too anxious. »

symptom

In some dogs, excessive anxiety results in self-harm, while dogs self-harm by biting their paws, for example. Some also hurt themselves trying to get out of their enclosure, forcing -MME -Brosseau to remind the owner to take his animal.

An anxious dog will pant, as if in heat. He may scratch the ground, spit, bark or even turn excessively.

“We also see owners who are very worried. Some of them cry when they leave their dog. They are really afraid that something will happen to them,” said -MME – Brusheau.

Solutions

In severe cases, the solution to help these dogs is medication. “-I know some people are against it, but I see a lot of improvement with the right dosage of the medicine,” said -MME – Brusheau.

Otherwise, to avoid your dog’s separation anxiety, -MME -Brosseau recommends leaving them in their crate for a while, every day, to get the dog used to being separated from its owner, from an early age.

“I myself have five dogs and there are two, the youngest, that I leave in their crate when I’m not there and sometimes even when I am,” he explained. If done from the beginning, the dog will love his crate. It’s like his little house. For a puppy that urinates every half hour this is difficult, but an older dog needs to be in his crate for eight hours. »

However, it must be ensured that the cage is large enough for the animal, in other words it must be able to stand up and turn around.

Last minute

Another solution to avoid your dog’s anxiety is to get him used to going to a kennel.

“People always look for a kennel at the last minute, when they need it. However, this should be automatic as soon as you get a dog, think -MME – Brusheau. One should look for a reliable kennel from the beginning. Sometimes it takes several tries, short stays at a time, before it works. People bring their dog to me for a day, then a day and a night and then two days, to give him a chance to adapt to the environment. »

Be aware of child care services

He also warned dog owners against people who offer dog sitting services but have no experience. “-In the pandemic, we see more people offering these services,” he said. Many of them do it like sidelines. You should avoid that because usually these people are inexperienced, unlicensed and uninsured. »

To operate his kennel, -Chanel -Brosseau holds a permit issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, -Fisheries and Food of -Quebec (MAPAQ), as well as insurance. “This ensures that we are inspected. -MAPAQ inspects our facilities, our cleaning protocols, etc. It gives people confidence,” he said.

The good kennel

In short, -Chanel-Brosseau suggests that dog owners take the time to find the right kennel for their dog.

“We can leave them in a kennel even if we don’t need them,” he concluded. It is good to have a boarding house that you have visited and tested because you never know when or you might need it, in case of a medical emergency, childbirth, transfer, etc. Nevertheless, the dogs enjoyed the ride. They are like day camp! »
