With an emphasis on adventure and the shinobi lifestyle, the Naruto franchise doesn’t have much time for romance. But in the decades that anime has existed, many relationships have become a big part of the story and have shaped how some characters encounter the world.
Many of the relationships that formed early on in Naruto also lasted well into Boruto’s successive series. Things are still going on. Those who haven’t? They were torn apart by the tragedy. And in rare cases, the couple in question should never have been together in the first place.
Updated July 18, 2022 by Amanda Bruce: While the focus is more on betrayals and battles for the shinobi world, fans will still debate whether Naruto has finished with the right man for his romantic partner in the shinobi world. Even though crushes on teenage characters are common in the series, some of Naruto’s romantic couples have come out alive. Naruto was one of the few characters in the franchise who lost the breadcrumb trail in their relationship early in the series. Fans who enjoyed watching the stories of the Naruto couples are in luck because they can watch the series again from the start on many streaming platforms.
Tenji and Kaguya (unknown)
If it weren’t for Tenji and Kaguya, the entire shinobi world wouldn’t even exist. Their relationship spawned the shinobi lifestyle that the Naruto franchise is familiar with, even if it is also focused on the history of manga and anime.
This means that the audience knows very little about the relationship between the two other than the fact that Tenji ends it after realizing how violent and powerful Kaguya is.
Hashirama Senju and Mito Uzumaki (unknown)
Like Kaguya and Tenji, the relationship between these two characters has shaped much of the shinobi world. Hashirama Senju became one of the founders of Konohagakure, and Mito Uzumaki became the first host of Nine-Tailed Fox.
Not much of their relationship with each other is revealed in the Naruto franchise, though, so it’s hard to see them surpassing a couple known for supporting each other or supporting each other in war. They need to build a powerful alliance, whether they truly love each other or not.
Sasuke and Karin (unknown)
If these two Orochimaru students are truly a romantic couple is in the translation. Karin was obviously a bit obsessed with Sasuke, but there didn’t seem to be any feeling of Sasuke’s friendship with Karin.
Karin’s feelings for Sasuke were so strong that she allowed him to bite her to gain access to his healing abilities – which she didn’t let anyone do. Sasuke just uses Karin’s skill to help her with her missions. If any relationship is the worst in the Naruto franchise, it’s the one.
Rasa and Karura (at least 3 years)
There are a few things the public knows about the Kazekage Race. Above them is that he rules his people and his children with an iron fist. Rasa is more concerned with making sure her warriors are the best than bonding with her children.
This is because his wife and the mother of his three children died immediately after Gaara was born. Rasa was clearly devastated by Karura’s death, and he didn’t take good care of it, blaming Gaara for the events and treating his son like a weapon rather than a child. Things might have been different if Karura had still endured the hardship, but in the end it remained unclear.
Fugaku and Mikoto (at least 14 years old)
The Uchiha clan seems to be less fortunate in love. While Fugaku and Mikoto seem like a loving couple, fans haven’t spent much time with them to get to know each other. The two instead fell for the plot to kill their eldest son.
At least, the two were together until their 13-year-old son was involved in the murder plot. Knowing that death would come to them before Itachi could, they leaned over and kissed their tops.
Sasuke and Sakura (once in at least 13 years)
Yes, Sasuke and Sakura are a fan-favorite couple, undeniable. Sakura, especially an adult, has a love for Sasuke that sweetens her difficult life. For most of the Naruto franchise, though, this love is a part.
Sasuke always treated Sakura horribly as they grew up, and he always trusted her. When they finally meet again, he leaves her again to pay for his past actions. Obviously they care a lot for each other in the Boruto series, but they’re not the best at showing it. The separations in their relationship seem to be healing for them because they have met each other multiple times and are reunited with parenting Sarada.
Kizashi and Mebuki Haruno (at least 15 years old)
Despite how important the family loss was to Naruto and Sasuke’s development, Sakura’s partner’s parents are rarely seen in the series. In fact, they were only used on the show in a tie-in episode of one of the Naruto movies.
This unique episode reflects the fact that Sakura comes from a loving home. Her parents cared about her interests, encouraged her to be a shinobi, and always had time for her and each other. They’re presented as a supported, cohesive front, as a much better match than most of the show’s couples, but there’s no real involvement in the franchise’s story lines.
Dan and Tsunade (unknown)
How long Dan and Tsunade have been together is not really determined in the series. Obviously Dan is the love of Tsunade’s life. She was ready to marry him, but they fell in love during the war.
Unfortunately, their relationship was severed when Dan died in the line of duty. Tsunade was deeply traumatized by the loss and didn’t save her from apparently not pursuing another relationship. However, he maintained an antagonistic friendship with Jiraiya for the rest of his life that he did not allow to develop further.
Hayate and Yugao (unknown)
Hayate and Yugao are a good snapshot of what happened to other members of the anime community. While most of the attention is on Naruto, his peers, and their teachers, there is an entire community living their lives behind.
Hayate and Yugao both become shinobi, members of the Anbu of Konohagakure, but Hayate is killed by Baki early in the franchise. In the background of the story, Yugao continues to visit his grave until he is forced to fight with his surviving body during the war. The audience never saw them while they were in a relationship, but they did see Yugao’s heartache and devotion in a long arch.
Shikaku and Yoshino (at least 17 years old)
Shikamaru Nara’s best known parents, Shikaku and Yoshino didn’t get much attention as a couple. But what the little fans saw in their association made it clear that they were collaborating with each other.
However, like his son, Shikaku is extremely strong outside of the home and in his work, he rejects his stubbornness and head for his wife. Yoshino commands his house like a ship without water and Shikaku relies on him. Other than that, fans know very little about the ins and outs of their relationship. They were together until Shikaku was killed in the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Sai and Ino (at least 14 years old)
For some fans, Sai seems to be Ino’s consolation prize. As a child, he already wanted Sasuke, but did he settle for Sai? Not exactly.
Ino, prone to emotional outbursts and the need to be the center of attention, finds her other half in Sai. Sai has to work to understand the emotion, and her brutal honesty proves that she finds Ino more attractive than her other friends. She taught him about emotions and he helped control his ego. For 14 years they met, married and raised their own young shinobi. They are still in the Boruto series.
Shikamaru and Temari (at least 14 years old)
Shikamaru and Temari were one of the first couples seen by fans who developed the franchise. While the other teenagers in the Naruto series have hatreds for each other that seem unrequited, the two develop a friendship, and then a relationship, based on respect for each other’s wisdom and skill.
They first found themselves on each other’s radar when they faced the Chūnin Exams. Over the next few years, they take turns saving each other’s lives, collaborating to form the aspiring shinobi, and denying that they have dated anyone who asks them. Some misunderstanding later, they married and raised a son. Temari can be treated like another angry cartoon of the woman in Boruto, but she and Shikamaru are completely dedicated to each other.
Asuma and Kurenai (unknown)
It is not known when Asuma and Kurenai changed from fellow shinobi to couple. They collaborated as sensei for Chūnin shinobi over the years. Little did they know they were officially together until Asuma’s life was on the line.
Fans see signs of their relationship as the two are often seen in the background together in the anime. Likewise, Asuma’s students teased them about their potential relationship on multiple occasions. Asuma has a silent devotion to Kurenai, vowing to protect her and their unborn child so that the next generation can survive. If she was still alive, they might have raised their daughter in the Boruto series.
Naruto and Hinata (over 14)
When they were kids, Naruto didn’t understand much about romantic love. Crushes and competition for love, yes. But not love. She didn’t see Hinata’s faith in her and the admiration for her character as she fell in love with him until it was almost too late. The events of The Last: Naruto the Movie opened his eyes.
When the couple is open about their feelings, they seem to find almost perfect balance in their relationship. Naruto has grown up a lot, no longer inclined to shoot. Hinata even opened it, no longer hiding behind. They are good for each other, even if as an adult his work as Hokage always means they don’t spend much time together.
Minato and Kushina (unknown)
Naruto’s parents are the kind of couple stories that are made up. Minato and Kushina met as children and became friends. As adults, they fall in love and get married, even if it’s not known how long they’ve been together before the nine-tailed fox is released into their village.
Kushina was a fierce fighter in his own right and Minato trusted his judgment. Even if he becomes Hokage, Kushina is tasked with hiding the spirit of the Nine-Tailed Fox by his side. They fight for each other – and for their village – to the end. Minato and Kushina sacrifice themselves to raise their child, and even in death their chakra shows their love for each other when Naruto meets the rest of them.
