love and thunder: a wonder not to be lost in history

Humorous, but crippled by a lame and unrelated script, the 29th chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (UCM), Thor: Love and Thunder (Thor: Love and Thunder; in theaters since Friday ) will not disappear from history.

This fourth Norse God adventure takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019). After regaining his form, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) teams up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to free the oppressed people. Meanwhile, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) is the ruler of New Asgard and scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) dies of an even more devastating cancer.

It is in this context that Gorr (Christian Bale), a frustrated and vengeful foreigner whose son dies, begins a genocide of the gods using a terrible weapon called a necroblade.

His goal: to force the gods to give him access to the Immortal, a mysterious place where it is possible to grant a wish. Thor, Valkyrie, Korg (Taika Waititi) and a revived Jane Foster with hammer powers Mjolnir try to stop Gorr from achieving his goals.

Directed and co-scripted by Waititi-who also gave us the fun Ragnarok in 2017-, this new Thor is somewhat reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Both acts are actually brought on by a crazy humor, a retro musical mark, psychedelic decorations and a typical story. At the heart of these two films, is a universal theme: family for the Guardians and love for Thor.

What sets Waititi’s film The Guardians – and all previous MCU chapters – however, is its overly slapstick tone. It’s definitely the less serious superhero movie since Deadpool (2016). The result is an avalanche of excellent comedies and delicious unique scenarios (these goats).

The problem is that the cement that unites these sketches is not of the very best quality. The screenplay lacks completion. Why Gorr should be stopped is unclear, as Jane Foster’s inclusion in the story doesn’t add much to the whole thing – except for a few moments of fan service.

The action is also necessary and can be even more present – in a film that even lasts two hours. However, no one goes to the cinema to hear Thor’s philosophy, which he always does for my taste in Amour et Tonnerre.

We also realized that after four films, Thor’s powers and power are no longer very appealing. We also miss Loki’s love/hate dynamic.

Cinematography, on the other hand, isn’t better or worse than Marvel has been accustomed to in recent years. On this topic, the highlight of the film comes in the 80th minute, when the work goes in black and white. Bale was so convinced there, the make-up was so successful and the pictures were so beautiful that it looked like it was back in the days of Orson Welles!

All in all, Thor: Love and Thunder is a film that shines with humor, but its impact on the MCU’s big picture is small. An act that, in the end, unfortunately, is not necessary at all.

Someone on Hulu probably once said to themselves: what if we made a movie that would be a combination between Game of Thrones, Kill Bill and Frozen? The result: The Princess (Disney+), a work not as inspired as its title.

In the Middle Ages, a childless ruler agrees to unite his kingdom with a heartless despot named Julius (Dominic Cooper). To do this, Julius must marry the eldest daughter (Joey King) to the sovereign.

The young woman in question, however, did not well accept to be given such. On the wedding day, he flees before being captured and then imprisoned in the tallest tower of the castle.

Determined to reject Julius ’hand, the princess escapes her prison, on her way to her final mission: to assassinate Julius to regain sovereignty over her father’s kingdom.

The idea of ​​a princess not needing a knight to save her was out of her time. Unfortunately, The Princess, a film by Vietnamese director Le-Van Kiet, lacks any substance or originality.

In this film – which tries to be a feminist allegory – all men are potential predators and all women are potential victims …

The Princess is a continuation of women’s action films with elaborate choreographic fight scenes, such as Atomic Blonde (2017), Black Widow (2020), Colombiana (2011), Salt (2010), Tomb Raider (2018) and Hanna (2011).

So the princess spends most of the film fighting against unnamed – and even more confusing – Julius ’minions. If King (the star of The Kissing Booth trilogy on Netflix) is impressive, the whole thing can quickly become tired and overwhelmed, the story progressing at a snail’s pace with each action scene.

If the choreographies are successful, the same cannot be said of the special effects and the musical score, not worthy of a film of this magnitude. The villain Julius is even more caricatural.

The most bizarre thing is that the film can impress girls who are not yet teenagers. Due to its violence, however, it is limited to viewers aged 18 and over. However, I find it hard to see how a clichéd story – and that there is nothing contemporary about it – can inspire an adult.

For a truly inspiring feminist story set in almost the same time period, let me recommend the much better The Last Duel (2021).

Stranger Buttons – Season 4 Volume 2

Even if after four episodes, the Stranger Things plot is each time more predictable, the second volume of season 4 (released on Netflix on July 1) is a huge success.

Earlier this summer, seven episodes of the penultimate season of the cultural event were posted online. A chapter whose length – and slowness at times – is explained by most of the characters and the creators need to give them screen time.

By the end of the 7th season, our small group of heroes was divided into four: Eleven performed in a Nevada laboratory; Mike, Jonathan and Will set out to rescue him; Jim, Murray and Joyce face demons in the Soviet Union; Luke, Dustin, Nancy, Steve and Eddie find a way to stop Vecna ​​from chasing Max.

In the second volume, which consists of two episodes lasting more than four hours, Vecna’s plans are clear: he wants to release the creatures of Upside Down to Hawkins. So the heroes have to unite to stop it.

It quickly begins with an episode 8 that combines an elegant and natural way with the intrigues of the first four seasons. We will also learn more about the beginning of the doorway between the two worlds and the dangers associated with this fragile frontier.

Episode 9, which was partily inspired by the cult film Red Dawn (1984), is even better.

Teenagers have plans to attack multiple arenas, such as Star Wars. On paper, the plan is perfect, but it will obviously experience complications, such as when Biff Tannen arrives to put sand in the tools of Marty McFly’s goals, in Back to the Future (1985).

The glitches are that at some point, most of the heroes find themselves in mortal danger.

It all ended in a heroic final war on Kate Bush’s music. A perfect scene, where mental and physical forces are used. It takes nearly 13 hours of listening to experience this sacred moment, but the wait is well worth it.

The last two hours of the season were truly amazing. The tension beautiful graduate is so almost impossible to turn away. It’s been so long since I’ve been attracted to a TV movie!

After this success, it’s all there for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things (probably in 2024)!
