The Matrix Awakens: the crazy Unreal Engine 5 demo will be gone soon! | Xbox Usa

If you followed the Game Awards 2021 ceremony, you probably remember the looks of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. But they’re not there for a game, in any case hardly, but for the Matrix Awakens demo that runs under Unreal Engine 5. If you haven’t already, we advise you to download it immediately as it will be removed from the Xbox and PlayStation stores on July 9th.

What exactly is The Matrix Awakens?

Matrix Awakens is not a game. This is a free technical demo that runs in real time under the Unreal Engine 5 engine, but is playable!

And that’s the whole difference. We’ve been treated to a lot of Unreal Engine 5 demos over the past two years, but it’s always videos of what the future of the Epic Games engine might be. But this time, it’s more real than ever.

The playable demo titled “The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience” is available on Xbox Series X | S and PS5, but there are only a few days left to download it as Epic Games will retire it on July 9 2022. Hurry!

The future is here

How is this demo designed? What is behind it? This was revealed by our colleagues from Eurogamer after talking to Epic Games.

If the characters of Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) look realistic, it’s because they were created using Epic Games ’MetaHuman technology, which we detailed earlier this year. 2021.

The playable technical demo is very clearly scripted, but that doesn’t stop it from being impressive when you know everything is running in real time. Explosions, for example, are calculated in real time using a physics system riots from Epic.

Does the world created for this demo seem too tight to you at first? So wait until you reach the last third where you can roam freely as well as control the cars. It’s Nanite’s technology, dedicated to geometry, that hits the mark here, along with Lumen, which manages the lights. It is also possible to play with the options of, for example, changing the position of the sun. Ray Tracing works wonders here.

We also know that in order to further improve the overall rendering, Epic relies heavily on the TSR (super temporal resolution) solution that injects data from past images to the present to improve quality. With the help of next generation tools and techniques, Epic Games has been able to create a realistic and cohesive world for a city the size of downtown Los Angeles (Downtown district). Here are the numbers.

  • 4,138 kilometers wide at its feet and 4,968 kilometers wide at its feet.
  • It covers 15.79 square kilometers
  • 14,519 kilometers wide at its foot
  • There are 260 km of roads in the city
  • There are 512 kilometers of sidewalks in the city
  • There are 1,248 intersections in the city
  • There are 45,073 vehicles parked, of which 38,146 could be driven and wrecked.
  • There are 17,000 simulated road vehicles that can be damaged
  • 7,000 buildings
  • 27,848 street side streetlights only
  • 12,422 manholes
  • Nearly 10 million unique and duplicate properties have been created to make the town
  • The whole world is illuminated only by the sun, the sky and by the emissive materials of the eyes. No light sources were installed for tens of thousands of streetlights and headlights. In night mode, almost all light comes from the millions of emissive windows in buildings
  • 35,000 simulated MetaHuman pedestrians
  • Average number of polygons? The 7,000 buildings consist of thousands of properties and each asset alone can represent millions of polygons. So we have a few billion polygons that only contain city buildings

This is the same team that took care of this Matrix demo as the one responsible for the Unreal Engine 5 demos before. To see what Unreal Engine 5 looks like in a real game, we recommend watching the first Hellblade 2 gameplay video released tonight.

Finally, note that while watching demo videos on your phone is impressive enough, the experience can be even more appealing on your 4K TV.
