Something promised, something deserved. A few weeks after the induction of the Variable Refresh Rate on the PlayStation 5, the Dutch game Guerilla Games Horizon Forbidden West recently received an update that allows it to take advantage of this same functionality. And like other games first party of Sony in front of him, especially Spider-Man Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apartit takes an opportunity to propose new, highly interesting performance targets.

Thus, the behavior of the “performance” mode will now change when the game is run on a console connected to a 120 Hz screen and VRR. Instead of the fixed frame rate of 60 fps offered until then, the framerate is now fully unlocked, and therefore free to roam above the 60 fps line. A very quick test of the updated game now allows us to see a framerate of around 70 fps in total, and can even sometimes reach 100 fps in the most favorable conditions. The improvement in fluidity is small, but still visible. In addition, the dynamic definition rendering system operates less aggressively, and allows itself on rare occasions to allow the frame rate to fall in a short time below 60 fps – drops that are completely invisible in VRR. . In doing so, it follows a little more consistency in its target definition of 3200 x 1800 pixels (with checkerboard rendering).

A “balance” mode at 40 fps as a complete compromise

At the same time, the game also gets a new display mode called “balance”, which is inserted between the aforementioned “performance” mode and the “quality” mode (translated in native 2160p at 30 fps). This is equivalent to a target framerate of 40 frames per second, and can be accessed by all owners of a 120 Hz compatible screen, even if no VRR-120 Hz is required because it is a perfect multiples of 40.

This frame rate can be achieved by maintaining the native 2160p resolution, but with checkerboard rendering (checkerboard translation). The loss of visual quality compared to “quality” mode is small, but with a sense of fluidity at the very mark rise – half perfect between 30 and 60 fps. In our opinion, this is the most convincing display mode of all, achieving an ideal compromise between fluidity and emphasizing the incredible visual abundance of the game’s environments.

Performance, Balanced, and Quality Mode Comparison of Horizon Forbidden West on PS5

The sharpness of the environments is almost the same in the “quality” and “balance” modes, and lower in the “performance” mode.

The semi-transparent textures, like the feather over Aloy’s shoulder here, betray the checkerboard rendering used in “performance” and “balanced” modes.

These new features are now available and free of charge for all PS5 game owners, via update 1.17.
