Reviewing the Huawei MateBook 16s: a 16-inch laptop with a limit to efficiency

Not surprisingly here, the MateBook uses series codes, this time with an aluminum chassis unibody (made in one piece) which guarantees a solid construction. We especially appreciate the thinner screen borders and its 3: 2 format which shows a great workflow and an occupancy rate of almost 90%.

Updated the keyboard with keys whose activation distance is increased, giving it more damped and nice typing. The backlight is adjustable to 3 levels and there is a fingerprint reader on the high right of the chassis to instantly open your session. The touchpad is rather wide, but you can feel it sink in when you click, so it’s not at the level you find in other competitors, like MacBooks and others.

The keyboard is pleasant to use, but the touchpad sinks a bit.

In terms of connectivity, Huawei has lost it all, with a USB-C Thundebolt 4 port, one USB-C 3.2 port, two USB-A 3.2 ports, an HDMI 2.0 port and a mini-jack output. So there’s a lot to do, even if it lacks an SD card reader. Bluetooth is on 5.2 and wifi 6 is on.

The webcam is finally back at the top of the screen, which we observed on the MateBook 14s at the end of 2021, but surprisingly not on AMD’s MateBook 16, which was released in the spring of 2022. With the 16s, the double is over the mouth filmed on webcam located at keyboard level. And the definition goes to 1080p, which is important. In bright light, the result is very satisfying, but in low light, it is of course more complicated and the image is more noisy.

The poorly located webcam of the old model has returned to a more standard location ... and more flattery for the person being filmed.

The components can be accessed by removing the 9 Torx screw on the bottom of the chassis, after which you can easily replace the M.2 SSD as well as the battery. Unfortunately the RAM is welded and has to be satisfied with 16 GB installed, with no possibility of evolution.

You can replace the SSD and the battery, but not the RAM.

This PC manages the temperature well and most of the chassis stays cool. We noticed a maximum of 49.6 ° C at the air outlet and around 39 ° C at the center of the keyboard. In terms of noise, it makes sense that we could hear a sigh during heavy tasks, with a peak measured at 41.6 dB while using the Cinebench software.

The MateBook 16s handles its temperature well.

Manifesting

Our test model is equipped with an Intel Core i7-12700H processor with 14 cores (including 6 performance and 8 efficient) clocked at 2.7 GHz and 4.7 GHz in Turbo mode. Its TDP (thermal envelope) is 45 W and can go up to 115 W under heavy load. It also has a 1TB SSD and 16GB of DDR5 RAM.

We have tested this processor on many occasions and it is clearly one of the fastest so far (performance index of 157). Thus it is faster than the Apple M2, but of course lower than the large Core i9-12900HK. It offers almost 27% more performance than the Ryzen 5800H equipped MateBook 16 and 36% more than the Core i7-1260P found in thin chassis like Samsung’s Galaxy Book2 Pro 15.

Very good results that allow him to deal with any office or difficult task without trembling. Not using a dedicated graphics card, it eliminates the hardware acceleration of compatible software and is content with the integrated Iris Xe to play some old or unnecessary games.

We also tested SSDs that offer good read (3.5 GB / s) and write (3 GB / s) speeds, with nothing even approaching the best M.2 exceeding 5 GB / s.

Strong points

  • Top-flight performance.

  • Large screen in 3: 2 format and thin bezels.

  • Accurate colorimetry of the panel.

  • Complete connection.

  • 1080p webcam.

Weak points

  • The panel is very reflective.

  • Limited screen brightness.

  • Medium touchpad.

How does grading work?

The Huawei MateBook 16s is an excellent laptop that corrects some bugs in the latest MateBook 16 and improves on the recipe, while raising the price. The webcam on the previous model is mostly back on top of the screen and the display is clearly there, driven by a powerful Intel Core i7-12700H processor. If the colorimetry of the screen is accurate, we still regret, however, that the lack of light output on the panel and the lack of anti-reflective treatment are worthy of the name.
