Temperatures come up burning this week. We talked about more than 30 degrees in Rennes, and in the North, 40 in Nantes, and in Toulouse… Everyone in France is worried.
And if people tend to sneeze a lot, there’s no doubt that animals are also very hot.
But where can a person eat ice cream, or splash in the swimming pool when it is too hot, how to refresh his dog, his cat, his rabbit, his bird, his henhouse, his cows or even his turtle?
What are the warning signs?
All you need to know is that apart from horses, very few animals sweat. Thus, heat can be very difficult for dogs, for example, especially if they are very young or very old.
To cool, animals have a basic system: they breathe harder, forcing blood circulation. “A kind of jerky panting”, shows Estelle Prietz, veterinarian at Var, contacted by balita.fr.
This is the first sign that dogs, cats, rabbits, cows, and many other animals are hot. A bird will also open its beak, but it also has feathers.
And it doesn’t stop there. In the case of real heatstroke – ” which can be fatalyesterday I had a consultation dog that died of it ”, determined the veterinarian – the animal may suffer from manure, even turn blue.
“If this is the case, there is no question to be asked, it is urgent,” he explained. But then, how to anticipate and help your pet cool down ?
First reflex: cool the animal
This seems reasonable, but the first thing to do is allow the animal move to a cool place.
Except for the question of leaving your pet outside, or in a car for example. You’ll need to let it in so it can be placed on the tiled floor, for example.
As for farm animals, if it is very hot, it is recommended let them cool in their stableseven if the conditions of a large field and a garden are not the same: plenty of wind and, in general, plenty of shade.
“Especially since large animals know how to control their temperature better. Maybe, though, a horse needs more rain than usual ”, says the veterinarian.
And for chickens, “in most chicken houses, it’s very hot. You have to make sure there’s a shady area in the open air,” Estelle Prietz said.
Read it if necessary
If it’s too hot, even inside, don’t hesitate the animal is wet. But not either.
Unless he’s really in danger, we won’t force him to take a bath. This can create stress and exacerbate the situation. Instead, read a glove or towel and rub the animal on it.
But watch out: with cold water, otherwise there may be a shock and the situation may worsen. “That’s why we don’t recommend wetting them with a garden hose,” the veterinarian said.
No effort and morning or late walks
Another important thing for your pet is when it is too hot : it should be taken early in the morning or in the evening.
During the day, the temperature is very high and the asphalt on which your dog will walk may be too hot for his fragile pads. “I always burn dogs that burn under their paws,” Estelle Prietz said.
That is, there is no question of hiking with your dog in hot weather, or “you end up walking with your dog”.
Adjust the diet
Once again, for cattle and other farm animals, there is no reason to change habits. On the other hand, for the little ones, you have to adapt, especially in terms of food.
“If the heat phase lasts too long, the animals won’t eat. Don’t hesitate to read a little of their croquettes or change to mash »continued Estelle Prietz.
As it is impossible to force an animal to drink, basically, we hydrate it without knowing it.
However, the animal, whatever it is, must have water available at all times.
In case of heat stroke, a visit to the veterinarian is mandatory
If your fur or fur partner has a heat stroke, cooling it down can help, but it’s not enough.
It is necessary Really take him to the vet. It can treat any complications like cerebral edema, heart problems, kidney failure, and more.
