Pack, a staff cross dog, grabs a frozen treat in his enclosure, near a parasol: at the SPA shelter in Plaisir (Yvelines), dogs swim in the mini-pool or even hide under the a parasol to fight against the heat wave.
“The pack will eat ice cubes made of croquettes and pâtés to cool and while it takes time, it will keep him busy”, explained AFP Élodie Juillac, manager of the shelter.
In addition to the relaxation park, Loky, a dog hunter who is very affectionate to the male but quarrelsome with his companions, splashes a small swimming pool for the kids. He refreshed his pads.
“As our parks are bright, we offer our dogs shade under parasols and swim in the swimming pools. And we make sure they always have fresh drinking water available to them”, he added.
Power, an American bully, lay on a cooling mat. She waited her turn to have fun. To get out of captivity, all dogs will walk in the forest for at least an hour each day, thanks to volunteers.
“The power couldn’t withstand the heat and the frozen carpet allowed him to be on the outside court while staying cool”, commented Élodie Juillac.
True to the post, for ten years, volunteer Carmen Corbay wore the collar strap to Power, a mastiff. It was time for him to walk. “In the hot wave, we shortened the walks and we took barrels to drink the forest dogs. We avoided the burning macadam and we stayed in the undergrowths”, he said.
He will then walk with three other boarders. Those most sensitive to heat, such as black colored sticks, come out at the end of the day.
In the habitat, there is no change in diet: “it is necessary to guard the water. Some animals eat little because of the heat, it is like humans”, says Élodie Juillac.

Mélanie Blondeau, a veterinarian for 12 years, says “there are breeds of dogs that are more susceptible to heatstroke, such as the bulldog”.
A dog suffering from heat stroke, “can no longer move forward, lies down, has a hanging tongue and has difficulty breathing,” he said. It is necessary to “put it in the shade and lower its temperature by placing a wet cloth under the stomach and on the pads. Above all, do not water it completely but give it fresh water to drink”.
And some dogs love to swim, like Cassegrain, a staffy pointer cross. “So he can clean his head and try physically”, every morning, he swims in a pond near the shelter because “in his park, he waits without moving”.
As with many dogs like stories. Staff have to deal with the rest. And the time of their internment has increased in recent years. “Dogs stay in the shelter between 45 and 49 days on average and some for several years”, Mélanie Blondeau complained.
“People are less investing in dog education and mentalities have changed. Our way of consuming has changed, and so has it for animals. We took it and we stopped!”.
Élodie separated the two dogs that were barking and barking. High heat can sometimes affect the behavior of animals. “As the dogs are“ married ” + several per box + in the heat, some are more nervous and we have to handle the fights”, he points out.
In the end, no swimming, no walking for the cats but drafts in the catteries. “We guard the water even if the cats drink less than the dogs and are better at resisting the heat”, explained Jérémy Trimbach, chief clerk.
The lodge has 145 dogs and cats as well as some rabbits waiting for a new owner. “We have waiting lists for private leave but we are full, a sad situation.” We now put in four dogs per week, for the wait for private departure of five dogs per day “.
