Remake: a weapon of mass destruction?

Square Enix isn’t the only company that exploits remakes as a key asset in solid revenue. Production costs are rising, and in a saga as much as Final Fantasy. In addition, the anthological structure of the franchise means we start from the left at each stage. This can be seen in the game’s plot, which since stage 10 has changed the structure of each opus, and it can also be seen in the expectations of the fans. It’s enough that the plot or the characters don’t fit the audience so we’re heading into a drama in terms of sales. We found it good Final Fantasy XVI. It’s HE, the next big project in the licensing canon, and yet, it doesn’t have to inspire people like FF7 Remake.

Nostalgia always pays off and promises that a remake is playing into the hearts of fans who are likely to buy the upcoming game. When the price freezes …

This was a point that was already debated when the first Remake was released: how much did the entire game cost? The normal price, in PC, in dematerialized form, is therefore almost 30% more expensive than the price to pay at the exit for an AAA. However, for now, Intergrade is discounted to € 52 on Steam. The pill will pass or not, that’s the question, so far the opinions are very positive.

However, there are only 52, which means that in three weeks, if the price goes up to 80 euros and people finish the session, the returns will be different. And if you’re not convinced by the aggressiveness of such a policy regarding your portfolio, we’ll recall that Forspoken, Square Enix’s next year -end triple A, costs at least € 80 on Steam today, with no discount today season, and the next edition is 105 euros. It’s almost double the price of triple A on the PC. The message is clear, if you are a fan of our quality products, you have to pay the price, and the presence of merchandising revealed at the conference in the middle of the games, with particular bracelets, an alarm clock, and a statue, would perfectly go in this direction. On the other hand, if you don’t like to pay for your games, Square Enix also thinks of you: free to play which is the company’s real financial asset.

The mobile: savior of tall projects

As we have seen, the alternating remake and canon project is to ensure profit. Exit from high priced games and marketing will also go in this direction. However, if we look at the last financial years of the company, these are MMOs, and therefore FF14, but especially many mobile projects, that generate money. They were not even absent from FF7’s 25th anniversary conference, and represented 50% of the announcements. First Soldier, the FF7 battle royal continues its momentum with new content. We’re already in Season 3, and according to Sensor Tower, it’s a game that only generated $ 100,000 in the last month. We’re far behind the revenues of the top 10 Square Enix mobile games, so the push for more enthusiasm is justified, especially at a time when the franchise’s Triple A games are in the news.

It may make fans want to wait for a game in the same universe. Other FF7 mobile projects have already been announced, and offer the game here, especially in combat. We’re talking about Ever Crisis, another remake. This game promises an adventure that connects different FF7 products. But watch out, who says free to play on mobile says seasonal content and microtransactions. In the trailer we see a variety of outfits, especially for Aerith, and we already know that there is a gatcha system to unlock the weapons … So it’s a safe bet that the economy model in particular expected to turn.

After the FF7 Remake

In fact, in the hearts of fans, there is no FF as loved as the seventh season. This is the first RPG of the entire generation. He is revered, worshiped, sacred, and his universe has already received eight dedicated works, surrounding the base game, not counting First Order, Ever Crisis, FF7 Remake in 3 parts, and the Crisis Core remake. But what can Square Enix do next? If we look closely, there are other games in the franchise that have a good aura: Final Fantasy XFF6, Final Fantasy IX good examples and they can do a remake, after various remasters and mobile projects. The ninth episode has been announced for months to host a remake, which would make sense, since it’s one of the best games in the saga.

But whatever it is, nothing can be of the caliber of an FF7, which benefits from movies, series, spin-offs, mobile gaming, portable gaming and premium games. So we have to think about the future right away, but we think Square Enix already knows this concern…
