Shown at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, A Plague Tale: Requiem is approached via a short demo. The opportunity for us to meet Amicia and Hugo, at this time in the context of medieval Provence. Don’t think they’re on vacation to take the pill, the duo has a lot of problems to solve. We give you our first impressions of this epic that once again puts mice in the spotlight.

A green rat, running on the grass… in Provence

In May 2019 an A Plague Tale: Innocence came out of the nest at Asobo Studios. It was during this time that the Bordeaux -based developer, best known for lending some products such as ReCore or The Crew, saw his talent recognized around the world. More than three years ago, we saw Amicia, Hugo and Lucas as well as clouds of ferocious rats through a demo of A Plague Tale: Requiem, the direct sequel to the first part. We were able to progress to the third chapter of the game titled “a burden of blood“which we can translate as”a burden of blood”. In this sequence, Amicia is forced to leave Hugo with an alchemist. Unfortunately, the little boy seemed to have a bad reaction to the treatments given to him.

Amicia and Luke are on a mission to collect nightshades to calm the young adventurer’s crises. On paper, the mission is simple: find the herbalist located in the suburbs and come back to deliver the medicinal plants. But there is “weeds”, Or in other words, screamed. The rat waves returned from the first stage and sow terror in the streets of the city. Worse, the guards, on the contrary, did not hesitate to brandish their spears at the sight.

Mature mechanics of the day

A Plague Story: Requiem doesn’t seem to annoy the mechanics of its game or its overall structure. Sure enough knowing the relatively rough gem was in his hands, the Bordeaux studio preferred to polish it rather than bet on another stone.. During our demo, he was asked to find his way through hordes of rats while avoiding the soldiers. Dropping food attracts rats, and extinguishing the flames of the guards makes the guards a piece of meat on the legs, which is highly valued by the rats. As in the first part, Amicia has various items like a slingshot and pots to achieve her goals. Using this material, he could distract guards, injure them, or light a life-saving torch. There is also a crossbow in this suite.

Since Innocence, the interface has been reworked. At any time, the player can display a wheel to select a weapon (whip, pot, etc.) and each weapon can be used with a type of bullet to be made (fire, smoke, etc.) . This process makes it possible to adapt more quickly to situations. Because if the formula stays close to what we experienced in Innocence, everything grew. The sets are bigger, the possibilities are more, and all the layers of gameplay are deepened. There is always more than one solution to a problem, especially inside arenas full of soldiers where tall weeds, saltpeter bags, rats, and ammo abound. Two warriors with torches, surrounded by rats, are below? Why not mix a pot with saltpetre, and thus make a smoke “grenade” that can extinguish the fire, and consequently the life of the two unfortunate?

Of course, infiltration is always strongly encouraged to achieve its objectives, but the little mouse Amicia in the first adventure gives way to a predator that invades.. If not transformed into medieval Lara Croft, Amicia is more comfortable than before facing her human opponents. Nowadays, seeing a troop no longer has to be the same as reloading a checkpoint. It is possible to fly, and it is possible to break the lines of sight of opponents to hide more. If the melee occurs, Amicia may try to counter the stabbing of her pursuer, if the young hero has a knife in his inventory. It’s a final solution, like The Last of Us or the Resident Evil remake. In addition, an enemy that comes too close can also be fired with a precise throwing torch: that works!

The shiny coat

Even if we run the demo part through Parsec, and therefore directly in the cloud, there’s something impressive about the graphics in A Plague Tale: Requiem. The textures are very detailed, the plants bend as the protagonists pass by, the faces are more expressive than in 2019. Overall, the lighting is more accurate, and the animations seem more for a result. flattening the retina, even if the patch “next gen”Has greatly improved Innocence. However, we have small reservations about the design level, which is not always very clear, or leads to faulty leads, such as once the boxes with white lids suggest that they can be folded, if not completely . Olivier Derivière’s compositions are beautiful again and can add a few grams of goodness to this world of brutes.

Our impressions

When we tried A Plague Tale: Innocence, we meant that only a few three of excellence were missing in the potion Asobo had created to burn the entire earth. These few threes, the Bordeaux studio may have found it in their pots used to make the game. Bigger, prettier and more experimental, A Plague Tale: Requiem seems to have all the plants it needs in its herbarium to get us off the ground for good when it lands this year. As a reminder, the Asobo title will be available from the day of its Game Pass release.
