An unprecedented adventure, which lasted several months, allowed some high school students from Lyon “Aux Lazaristes” to interact with information professionals. Journalists, technicians agree to show them the daily life of their profession … and these young people are really building their own news! To be discovered in full in this article
This morning in mid-June, a small dozen middle school students “aAux Lazaristes” gathered for the last time in the classroom for their “start-up journalism” training showed little impatience.
These young people about 15 will finally be able to attend the first full preview of “their” news. An integral production, which they conceived, matured, circulated, wrote, and produced over several months, at the rate of one lesson per week. An unprecedented adventure that, due to the covid crisis, will mark two years of their schooling.
Come back. In 2019, these young students agreed to participate, weekly during recess, in a meeting of television professionals. An operation sponsored by Séverine Pucci, editorial coordinator of the program “You are good” in France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. He is already accustomed to working with journalists and image technicians. She is also an attentive mother who is open to the world.
Her idea was confirmed and supported by the regional management of France 3, and in particular Isabelle Staes (who has since been director of regional information for the entire chain), and Eric Baraud, her successor to the head of France 3 Aura. Many professionals are willing to participate in this approach to education. Stéphanie Bouix and Fredéric Gramond, editors, and Yannick Kusy, senior reporter, came to meet these young volunteers.
Initially, the exchanges were very frequent and addressed basic topics. What information. What is the role of a reporter. How to identify a reliable source of information… then, the topics deepen. We evoke the theme of ethics, of the essential neutrality expected of honest viewers of newspapers.
Some realize, sometimes with surprise, that journalism forces you to sidestep your opinion. You have to think about comparing points of view, cross-checking sources, being wary of rumors … The sympathetic image of the sports journalist, somewhat chauvinistic, comes against the investigator, in search of truth and distance . College students were excited, caught up in the game.
Each week, they educate themselves on television writing. Get to the point. Learn how to sum up your point. Can be understood through comments, and through images…
Then comes the more technical sessions, which have to have a more game aspect. We are now in 2022. Smartphones, in particular, allow these young people, who are already accustomed to them, to understand the ideas of frames, light, travel, zoom … but also of sound, atmosphere . How do you position yourself correctly when conducting an interview? How is the communication between one filmmaker, and another questioner?
Students attended several site editing sessions. Our colleagues showed what skill they could be in chaining the sequences, to describe the words. The young people, at first amazed, gradually understood the dual interest in commentary and sequences. Soon they will act.
One fine day, they walked. First in the game, they turned their first micro-sidewalks, and measured the difficulty of collecting and sorting out the vigorous reactions. Later, along the way, some of them have to overcome their shyness of asking and strangers. But they … and they love it.
The level went up. We want a full diary. The conductor builds the collective. There are titles, reports, visitors, a picture, citizens… We debated the content. Covid, holidays … subjects were chosen according to the set date. All will be released in June.
With increasing ease, apprentice reporters alternated between outsider meetings and class interviews. With each new session, they master, each time more, the technical requirements, the writings …
After several months of training and discussion, they were finally able to combine all the elements of their famous diary. They chose to invite two young actors with disabilities.
In France 3, professionals completed the complete assembly. The newspaper is blended like all the usual products. We even added end credits lined up behind the scenes photos, and illustrated by “ Will I stay or will I go.. “, from Clashes, a piece that is once again in fashion.
