Game News The Callisto Protocol: A simple clone of Dead Space? We were answered by the creator of the awesome game
Coming back with more excitement in the latest State of Play, Callisto Protocol will soon arrive to kill the jitters on PCs and consoles. A project very reminiscent of Dead Space, the famous survival -horror that thrilled people at the time PS3 / 360. And for good reason, it was again Glen Schofield – father of the series – who was in charge! Imagine we had a chance to ask him a few questions. Ready to shake? Here we are, it’s time for the interview.
Like a delicious “jump scare”, the Callisto Protocol surprised everyone when it was announced at the Game Awards 2020. A revelation is enough to make you jump for joy – and not fear. How do you deny a new horror of survival from the creators of Dead Space with Glen Schofield himself, father of the famous license, aboard? Ten years ago, it was the last terrible game, simultaneously oppressive, bloody, brutal. Just scary. But after a half -hearted third season and the closure of the Visceral Games studio (the origin of the three opuses released so far) the series is immersed in deep silence. Glen Schofield, for his part, has already left the ship to participate in Sledgehammer Games, a company he founded a few years ago. We owe him a lot of games in a famous FPS. “Believe it or not (before The Callisto Protocol, editor’s note) I was in the desert to rest after my ten years in Call of Duty” the creator of Dead Space tells us, via Zoom. “And when I was there, through drawing, ideas came to me. The future The Callisto Protocol is one of his ideas ”.

Beyond Dead Space
Looking at the Callisto Protocol, it’s impossible not to think about Dead Space. Everything seems to be in the game: a lone hero who has to get out of a space base, a game interface blended behind his back to strengthen the immersion, a kind of telekinesis to escape the desperate situation. Not to mention the brutality, the atmosphere, a lot of things really. “Callisto has his own identity” said Glen Schofield. “The game is set on the moon, in a dungeon, while Dead Space is set on a mining ship, so everything has to do with mining resources. For this game, everyone has to have a connection to the prison”.
In The Callisto Protocol the main character is a pilot, while in Dead Space he is an engineer. They are not of the same skill. -Glen Schofield
This is why the hero, Jacob Lee, can rely on his stun baton. And that the creatures – the “Biophages” – (guards and prisoners who mutate) carry implants with a biography, which the player has the opportunity to consult. But most of all, the Black Iron prison offers a maze of corridor options for Glen Schofield and his Striking Distance studio. “In the Callisto Protocol there is a deeper mystery” explains the developer to us. “The more you progress in the game, the deeper you will fall into prison”.
Dead Space’s father’s new project thus relies on “a rich history” and “working characters”, clearly more than the famous horror series that characterizes him. One way for Glen Schofield to bring back the little people is The Callisto Protocol, one of the pillars of “horror engineering”, the nickname given to the project’s creative vision. A term that refers to the amount of detail needed to make a game like this. “When you make a scary title, a lot of things are done by hand” Glen Schofield enlightens us. “We’re not talking about big systems like an action game (…) here, it all starts with the guts (…) there’s no pre-established plot, no“ pattern ” , because otherwise, it’s no longer creepy. ”.
For me, sound is a mechanism. I spent a lot of time with my sound director reviewing, detailing, the sound effects of the project (…) Graphics are important too. In The Callisto Protocol, you can see a real maturity in terms of sets and lighting (compare Dead Space, editor’s note) -Glen Schofield
Succeed in creating panic
Among other columns, Glen Schofield cites the atmosphere, the tension, the violence, the helplessness. So sure, in The Callisto Protocol, you have to first trust yourself, manage your bullets well to anticipate the trials to come (“have a partner to help Jacob Lee at different times in the story” as the developer , however). With this in mind, Glen Schofield says his new project hides many secondary roads -which hides advances for the hero and explanations about the scenario. Despite a structure believed to be “fair line”, Jacob Lee is undoubtedly confused by the Black Iron hole.
In The Callisto Protocol, there is a lot of replayability. You will not find all the optional trails and all the upgrades during your first game -Glen Schofield
Something that will add even more to the atmosphere. Above all, in The Castillo Protocol, no no navigation system at Dead Space, explains Glen Schofield, or a beautiful line of land that shows you the direction to follow. Another difference: the possibility to capture enemies from afar thanks to GRP, a gravitational weapon. “If four monsters resist you, using this tool, I can get the first front, single it up and send it into the scene. I can also send it against obstacles, spikes, crusher” describes the developer. “I can even bring an enemy back into chaos and attack them with the stun baton.” Not to mention that the environment is your friend, with things – saws – to throw at opponents.
Will Callisto Protocol flash in Half Life 2? Maybe yes! “I’m a big fan of the game” agreed Glen Schofield. “Sometimes you take inspiration from the best games and cross your fingers that we can’t blame you too much (laughs)”. Words that resonate in a particular way, as Electronic Arts works today a remake of Dead Space, scheduled for Jan. 27, 2023. “I wish good luck to the developers, to the partners” says the father of the license. “They did a remake of my game, and it makes sense (…) but it’s true that it made me feel a little weird. I wouldn’t have done a remake. I would have done differently ”.
- Callisto Protocol will be released on December 2, 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series
