Review of the Asus TUF A15 (TUF507RM): a gaming laptop powered by the Ryzen 7 6800H and a very good GeForce RTX 3060

The design of the TUF A15 changes compared to 2021 with a more sober chassis, simple black and no raised lines. Everything remains plastic, but we have to admit that the chassis is less rigid and gives a relatively low -cut look. The hood is now decorated with the brand logo and no longer the TUF inscription, which isn’t too bad.

The hood now displays the brand logo.

The touchpad is now classic and no longer consists of a pad and two dedicated clicks. He sank a little under pressure, but a computer play less intended to be used without a mouse. On the side of the keyboard, we find the transparent design of the ZQSD keys and the typing is generally nice and quiet. Unlike high-end models, RGB backlighting is not adjustable key by key and you have to be satisfied with one color zone. However, we can use some of its effects through the Armory Crate software to customize the keyboard and the colors we want to display.

For connectivity, everything is available or almost: on the left side, two USB-C ports, including DisplayPort compatible, USB-A 3.2 port, Ethernet, HDMI and mini-jack socket; on the right side, only one USB-A port. Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6 provide fast network connectivity. The webcam shoots at 720p and the picture quality is poor in low light and good lighting conditions, with manufacturers generally not bothering with dedicated gaming computers.

As for the components, you will need to remove a set of Phillips screws to access them. Good news, the RAM modules can be replaced, as well as the M.2 SSD and the battery. An important point when it comes to repairing or changing its configuration.

The PC is scalable, a good point.

This PC does well in terms of heating. In intensive use, there is a warm spot towards the center of the chassis under the screen with a peak of 54 ° C, but the whole thing stays cool. The PC is very noisy when turbo mode is activated. We noticed about 53 dB, either in the game or under the CineBench R23. That is, it is better to play with headphones…

The Asus TUF A15 TUF507RM-HQ083W has an eight core AMD Ryzen 7 6800H processor clocked at 3.2 GHz with 4.7 GHz. The TDP of this 45 W that can go up to 57 W during the required calculations is not, however, nearly as high as Intel processors can double (at the cost of a lot of heating). Here it also comes with a 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of DDR5 RAM.

With a score of 147 in our CPU performance index, the Ryzen 7 6800H puts 11th Gen Intel CPUs and AMD Ryzen 5000s in the air. It offers a performance boost of around 16% over the Ryzen 7 5800H we’ve tested before, but it’s even worse than its direct competitor, Intel’s Core i7-12700H, which has many more cores (14 in total -an). So far, Intel has regained control, but this 6800H is still one of the most efficient processors on the market. To go ahead and have more details on the results obtained in different applications, we recommend reading our dedicated article:

A fast word on PC SSD that benefits from decent read speeds (3 GB / s on average), but far from the best M.2. At the time of writing, the results are not very good with 1.5 GB / s on average.

The PC is under Assassin's Creed.

The PC underneath Assassin’s Creed.

We’ve already tested Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 in length, width and width, and now know what to expect, but here it manages to surprise us. It features 140W TGP, which is great for this GPU.

The GPU score of 180 is the best we can get on an RTX 3060, almost 30% better than last year’s Legion 5’s 130W. Also interestingly, our Asus TUF A15 offers 5% more performance compared to the Acer Nitro 5’s RTX 3060 which is still powered by the same 140 W TGP. The difference is undoubtedly due to the GPU / CPU pair that is here in favor of the Ryzen 7 6800H. The graphics card shouldn’t be embarrassed by the RTX 3070 Ti of the Asus Strix Scar we tested, but it clearly won’t compete with an RTX 3080 Ti.

To be more concrete, we played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in Full HD at 83 fps and most of the games we tested were over 60 fps. Activate raytracing will greatly affect the performance, but DLSS will definitely help, even if some more difficult titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus may be less fluid in any case. It’s hard to take advantage of the 165 Hz screen in these conditions, unless you minimize graphics or play low power games like Fortnite hope Counter-Strike.

Activity / Autonomy

At 15.6 inches, weighing 2.2 kg, and a chassis of 35.4 x 25.1 x 2.5 cm, the TUF A15 carries well in a backpack, even if it obviously requires more space than a model. office. Count 733 g for its charger, just the same size.

The charger performs like most gaming PCs.

The charger is charging like most PCs play.

During our autonomy test, the PC did not last long, lasting only 4 h 26 min with Netflix video playback under Chrome, backlight and Bluetooth deactivated, headphones connected and the volume recovered by 50%. Some models are even better, even if this type of computer will always stay plugged in to enjoy the highest performance in the game.

How does grading work?

The Asus TUF A15 (TUF507RM-HQ083W) offers excellent processor performance, driven by an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, and a great gaming experience on a GeForce RTX 3060 that doesn’t run. You really have to compose using a chassis that isn’t one of the brightest and a frustrating autonomy, but it’s the price to pay for a tariff that doesn’t properly fly.
