Education: visiting Marseille, Macron wants to generalize “Schools of the future”

President Emmanuel Macron, who passed through Marseille this Thursday to a “laboratory” school testing an education experiment opposed by teachers ’unions, stated that the ambition in the coming months is to expand this method “anywhere in the territory”.

“Our ambition to the Minister then in the coming months is to generalize this approach”, which includes putting resources while also providing “more pedagogical freedom to teachers”, Emmanuel Macron explained in Pap’s presence. Ndiaye at the Menpenti school in Marseille.

This experiment in Marseille schools was launched in early September, on the occasion of the “Marseille en grand” plan launched by the President of the Republic to help France’s second city, where the poverty rate exceeds 50% in some districts. , to catch up.

11,000 students and more than 600 teachers were involved

A total of 59 “laboratory” schools were selected to conduct this experiment, which in particular provides for free recruitment of teachers and should allow establishments to spend on a new project in the cultural environment. , languages, environment or science. The goal according to the Élysée: to provide “more freedom and autonomy to educational groups in order to build a more equitable and more inclusive school system”.

Among the schools concerned, 38 were classified by priority education networks, such as the Kallisté park school, or the Saint-André La Castellane school. The other 21 are not, like La Blancarde elementary school, Rouet school or Calanques de Sormiou elementary school. In total, nearly 11,000 students and more than 600 teachers were affected by the system.

Macron puts “means on the table”

Marseille mayor Benoît Payan greeted the press on Emmanuel Macron’s desire to “put resources on the table that have never been done before”, and to “get kids to do math and foreign languages”. Of the 2.5 million euros in the total budget planned, 360,000 euros have already been made, said Christian Abrard, prefect in charge of the education part of the “Marseille en grand” plan.

“But there are red lines: this is the Republican school, the equality of all schools”, rebuked Benoît Payan, “opposing” the recruitment of school directors.

While Emmanuel Macron was greeted by about fifty euphoric children, before touring the workshops with the students, about thirty demonstrators stationed near the school first asked for more resources for Education. . The Marseille experiment raises many questions, especially the idea that school principals can choose their group, a major change in the National Education model.

The risk of a “two-speed school”

“National Education is not a cost to beginnings “, stated Stéphane Crochet, secretary general of SE-What, who is concerned that the new minister” finds himself with a unique path “and that the experiment is unusual.” This experiment seriously questions the national character of public schools, the status of teachers as state officials, the fair treatment of staff in their request for transfer ”, added the FO Federation of Education (FNEC FP-FO).

Some point to the risk of a “two-speed school”, with establishments that are better equipped than others and not necessarily located in poor neighborhoods. The president and Pap Ndiaye, who made his second field trip after the symbolic first visit to the college of slain professor Samuel Paty, were also awaited by other subjects.

“This experiment is a showcase of whether the president should focus on hot topics in National Education such as salary, the melting point of the index point or the roadmap of the new minister that have not yet been announced,” Guislaine David said. , general secretary of Snuipp-FSU, the first elementary union.
