AEDs as they are called in National Education are the supervisors who supervise students. Significant links to the operation of the establishments, some of them, at the end of the contract, despite the uncertainty due to a law of ownership not yet in force.
Until then, education assistants have a one-year contract that can be renewed 5 times. At the end of the 6th year, they were thanked.
But the law, passed in March, against school harassment, Article 10 provides that AEDs can be tenured after a 6-year contractbecause they are often the ones who recognize harassment situations, and team strength is important.
However, implementing decrees have still not been published. These personalities do not know if they will be able to continue their mission. Institutions also don’t know if they can keep it or if they need to recruit other assistants. By the end of the school year, the situation is unsustainable.
A decree that has been postponed several times
“The publication of the decree was posted several times, until the end of May, then the beginning of June, due to the formation of the government taking time ”, explains Laurence Hopp, national delegate of school life staff to the Se-What union, and his own CPE, principal education adviser, at Strasbourg academy. “It is not yet known when it will be released. There, it’s really urgentnow in school life, we renew a contract and new recruitment, so now we organize school life in the establishments so that the start of the school year takes place in a peaceful manner. These staff need to know if they can continue working or if they should try to find another job.“.
This is the case of Caroline, an education assistant at a college in Ille-et-Vilaine. His contract expires Aug. 31. “I’m already stressed because I don’t know what I’m going to do on September 1. I can’t see myself going back to Pôle Emploi, I can’t see myself doing anything because it’s a job we do with love. Colleges and high schools struggle to recruit educational assistants as we have experience, we know families, we know students, we are trusted“, Said this 42-year-old woman, who has 4 children. Of the 6 AED positions in his college, he and a colleague are in their 6th year and the third is in his 5th year. “The college had to leave with a new team that would never be formed“, He regretted.
Only 30% of educational assistants are students
“We are always obligated to innovate our teams within the lives of the school“, acknowledges Laurence Hopp, of Se-What,”while some people recruited as educational assistants are qualified staff, with experience and allowing a certain strength of teams. These are people who want to make a career out of it, which is not planned to start because it is usually a ‘profession’ aimed at students. But the profile has changed. We no longer have many students: now it is about 30% of the population of educational assistants. All the rest are people who want to pursue this profession. Especially in rural areas, for many mothers, it is a practical job and allows them to restore family life and professional life. Typically, educational assistants are now in their thirties, they are no longer 20-year-old students doing it to pay for their education.“.
Audrey, AED near Grenoble testified: “In my establishment, these are no longer student jobs, we are all mothers! In big cities, yes, there are gyuy students who come to work as AEDs, but in small colleges like ours, we’re older, we already have families and we’re looking for a permanent situation.“.
“You still need a certain maturity to make it work.“, added Héloïse, 31, who works in Clermont-Ferrand.Principals need staff who are there constantly, full time. I would have loved to move on I really like being a supervisor, we have a special relationship with students, I feel useful. We’re like ants doing all the work that doesn’t have to be seen at first glance but is necessary for the proper functioning of college life. The students, I know very well, we remember what happened in the past years, the problems they encountered, whether at school or on a personal level. Over the years, the easier we find ourselves settling, the more we learn how to handle a crisis situation. It is during the 5th and 6th years that a person begins to ease and knows how to react.. “
“Feeling left out”
Héloïse founded a literary club to give young people a desire to write, she takes care of “Homework done”, a homework assistance system for students in difficulty. If educational assistants spend many years in an establishment, they are always invested, like Isabelle, 55, AED for 6 years at a vocational high school in Montrouge, in the Paris region. He cared especially for the new students, he accompanied them in their steps. “I was so sad to leave them, like feeling abandoned ... “, she cried.
“In my establishment I was told they wanted me to continue but it would all depend on this famous order, said Emmanuelle, supervisor near Annecy. Let’s wait, we can’t then catch us in the water at the end of the year. Students always ask me ‘will you stay, will you stay?’ and I cannot answer them, we know not. I love my job, I find it bad! I don’t want to look for another since that’s what I want to do so I’m really hoping that this decree will come out so I can continue.“
