Metaverse for kids: What impact does it have on their universe?

After the metaverse for everyone comes the metaverse for kids that lacks advantages as well as disadvantages. Some companies are starting to position themselves as providers of the best virtual reality for children. Granted, their initiatives are commendable, but we don’t realize that this universe is also part of the dangers. Raising awareness of a shared responsibility, between parents and promoters of metaverses for children, is one of the purposes of this article.

Invented by the author of “Snow Crash” (1992) Neal Stephenson, the word “metaverse” refers to a virtual reality environment. As it is connected to the internet, so you can access it anywhere and anytime from a computer or a smartphone.

The metaverse we know today bears some similarities to the one Stephenson envisioned. Except that the patchwork of online virtual worlds serves us caring for the environment still in her infancy. But that doesn’t stop people and businesses from getting busy in the metaverse, if at all possible buy virtual land, play or even train soldiers.

The metaverse for children represents endless possibilities in:

  • socialization;
  • learn new skills;
  • play online games alone or with friends;
  • taking virtual courses on educational platforms;
  • and so on

Here, we can discuss the example of Minecraft that introduces some cultural ideas to children through ample learning environments. Soon, the Epic Games and LEGO duo will be a hit with young people as well.

However, the child metaverse there are drawbacks. To quote only:

  • cyberbullying;
  • the proliferation of inappropriate content.

So it’s up to parents and teachers to help kids safely navigate metavarse for kids.

Some experts seem less optimistic about the impact of the child’s metaverse. naa na, social networks have landed many misfortunes : depression, self -harm, mental health problems, and so on. Kid Metaverse could be even worse than them.

However, a study conducted by the University of Southern California on gambling shows the opposite of these claims. In fact, it outlines that Games and virtual reality promote empathy, and have a positive impact on mental health.. Granted of course they are used correctly.

The only problem is, companies don’t care about user security as it is already in the metaverse. It is very likely that these same actors will continue their old habits in this new virtual reality. And how about loneliness, the many influx of dangerous content… and why not commit suicide.

The Child Metaverse begins some advantagesto find out:

  • understanding abstract concepts in a compelling way;
  • access to almost real hands-on experience to help children better understand their environment and how it works;
  • developing children’s social skills;
  • provide a safe and controlled environment to socialize and make friends;
  • the existence of a springboard for creativity and the development of children’s social intelligence;
  • the metaverse as a source of entertainment;
  • unity between parents and children;
  • and so on

It is up to the parents, however, to be aware of the potential risks and to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of their children. In this way, the children’s metaverse can be an ideal place for children to explore and learn.

Granted, the metaverse for kids has its strengths, but it also has them its weak points. Let’s discuss in particular:

  • cyberbullying (often a source of harassment of children);
  • lack of confidentiality and privacy issues;
  • inappropriate content (violence, sexual content, hate speech, etc.);
  • creating a confidence in the child given his or her highly immersive and engaging nature;
  • the physiological and physical risks associated with the metaverse for children due to intensive use of VR headsets (dizziness, nausea, headaches, etc.);
  • unequal access that could create an educational disadvantage for the less affluent;
  • and so on

To make this effective, Parents are advised to closely monitor their children’s activities in the metaverse. So here are some things to consider:

  • acute monitoring of their online activities, what they see and do in the children’s metaverse;
  • basic definition of rules and establishment of clear guidelines for the use of the metaverse (even if it means changing them later);
  • advice on how to behave when interacting with other people when online (including encouraging them to be polite and considerate);
  • assisting in the optimized management of time spent in the virtual world and the real world;
  • and so on

Also, the manufacturers and companies have their share of responsibility. True, it may seem bad to expect much from them, but they need to consider the following parameters:

  • content moderation;
  • reporting and suppressing wrongdoing, with clear mechanisms to deal with such reports;
  • design of VR devices and metaverse systems tailored to the comfort and well -being of children;
  • integrating anti-virus software (including but not limited to password protection and encryption) into VR devices and metaverse platforms for children;
  • and so on

When we talk about children, and the metaverse for children, we inevitably raise the question of parental protection and responsibility. However, this responsibility should be shared by technology companies. Because by ignoring the dangers that children face on their platform, and while using their tools, they are bound to lose customers.
