Cherry MX 10.0N RGB review: a low-profile mechanical keyboard for office and gaming automation

Ergonomics

The MX 10.0N RGB is a full-size keyboard with a numeric keypad. The metallic and ultra-thin chassis gives it a relatively high-end look while ensuring perfect rigidity. It stays very strong, with a completely black coat and its borders feeding the keys. So it’s more compact than many keyboards of this type: it measures a total of 42.5 x 12.7 x 2.2 cm and doesn’t take up a lot of space on a desk.

Its unique thinness is obtained thanks to the presence of low profile mechanical switches, which are thinner than conventional switches. This is not without consequences for ease of use, because with such goodness, there is no need to use a palm rest. A foot running the full width of the keyboard is also placed at the back to raise it if necessary. Adorned with two hinges, this foot offers an original design that nonetheless has one drawback: it retracts automatically and it has to be put in place if you want to move the keyboard on a table. Thus it is doubled several times as it is activated, which is not very serious, but it can be annoying in the long run.

The keys are smooth, but we noticed that they are poorly anchored and that they may be incompatible in use. A find common to other low profile keyboards, but does not interfere with typing quality. This asymmetry is a bit unsightly.

The keys are easy to align.

The functions (F) offer only a few shortcuts: multimedia, adjustable backlight brightness at 5 levels (F5 and F6), selection of RGB profiles (F3) and scrolling speed of the effects (at F7 and F8). The keyboard has a full and fully customizable RGB backlight. The advantage of these dedicated RGB shortcuts is that they can be changed on the fly without going through software. Continuing, however, it is possible to use the Cherry Utility to change key shortcuts and backlight colors and key effects by keystroke.

The backlight is completely customizable.

Finally, the USB-C to USB-A keyboard cable measures 1.6 m and can be removed, if it needs to be replaced, for example. The USB-C tip is however cut to the millimeter connected, which should prohibit the use of cables from other brands. Besides, this cable isn’t paracord, unlike other high-end keyboards, and its classic rubber should wear out easily.

For this MX 10.0N RGB, Cherry didn’t choose the classic MX Red switch, but the MX Speed switch which is more sensitive and faster. Thus it is possible to write in lightning fast, but this sensitivity risks causing many typos, especially in the beginning. Their activation stroke is linear at almost 1 mm (one of the shortest available), but they can travel up to 3.2 mm and their activation force at 45 cN, like the classic MX Reds. They are also guaranteed for 100 million clicks, which should ensure a very good longevity. The rebound, however, seems a little soft to use. The MX Speed low profile switches are therefore effective, but their sensitivity to activation and soft bounce shouldn’t appeal to everyone.

Mechanical switches are mandatory, the keyboard can be used to play, especially since Cherry combines N-key rollover and theanti ghosting to be able to keep as many keys as you want without the problem of unwanted activation. In any case, the keyboard is silent for a mechanical model and the chassis does not show any resonance, unless you have a heavy hand typing.
