MultiVersus: The fighting game that knocked out Super Smash Bros. ?

It’s impossible to talk about multiplayer fighting games without mentioning Super Smash Bros. The end. Fight games that rely on a story mode worthy of the name are unique, very unique. There’s of course NetherRealm which is an exception to Mortal Kombat and Injustice sagas, but that’s all. MultiVersus decided to completely discard the narrative aspect to focus on the fight and just the fight. The studios running the project didn’t even justify, or nearly, the meeting between the members of the Justice League, the Looney Tunes and all the other characters on the MultiVersus roster.

In summary, the icons of Warner Bros. teleported to arenas to compete and… Voila! it seems lightly presented like that, but it makes coffee, and that’s the main thing. Fans of different universes will be happy to know that some actors and actresses have returned to their roles here, but only for English voices. So, Maisie Williams once again lent her voice to Arya Stark from Game of Thrones while Kevin Conroy wore the Dark Knight costume. He is the Gotham vigilante interpreter in the animated series Batman: The Animated Series of 1992… one of the origins of Harley Quinn’s character who is also in the game… The circle is complete!

What do DC comics, Looney Tunes, Scooby-Doo, Steven Universe, and Game of Thrones have in common? Nothing … except for the fact that these franchises are all owned by Warner Bros. Combining multiple universes, on theme and look so far apart, is not easy. Manga fans still painfully remember the artistic direction of a Jump Force being unanimous, and that’s the least we can do.

MultiVersus takes the opposite direction when it comes to its graphics. AD can be called “cartoon 3D” and it fits the entire cast and even the arenas perfectly. The care given to the characters, keeping their specifics and their traits, is to be commended. Even a Faceless like Arya Stark, whose visuals have been completely reworked unlike Bugs Bunny or even Finn the Human, did well.

Technically speaking, nothing to complain about. Even on older gen consoles (we play on the PlayStation 4 Pro), MultiVersus has its own. Player First Games is always fluid once in the arena which is essential for a Platform Fighter. The same goes for netcode that seems solid for now as well as matchmaking that is smooth. Finding players only takes a few seconds, or even ten seconds in the worst case.

Now let’s do business because the fight game is above all judged by its fights. MultiVersus was apparently inspired by the manager of the thing… Super Smash Bros. The end. Nintendo fans are in familiar ground here. The game is from Warner Bros. Takes the basics of the genre, that of Platform Fighter. Simply put, many players compete in a closed 2D arena with the intent of driving other fighters out of it by inflicting damage on them. The higher the damage gauge, the easier the ejection.

MultiVersus, like its famous model, relies nervous confrontations, easy to have fun and accessible to as many people as possible, even if you also like it technical… as long as you know all the subtleties. This fight game focuses on cooperation and collaboration. Each character has attacks and “moves” specially designed for this purpose. Sammy was recovering. Wonder Woman saves him from ejection with her whip. Batman hides his allies in the smoke. and so on. For others, we are dealing with the classic, but effective, with simple and special attack, dodge, jump. In short, Platform Fighter in good and appropriate form!

Player First Games is also added an “RPG” overlay the basic formula by combining a progression system for the player and for the different characters on the roster. By gaining XP and therefore leveling up, the maximum of which is now 15, each warrior unlocks different items and especially Assets. These are passive bonuses that can improve the behaviors of said fighter and/or his teammates. at the risk of creating an imbalance between players! As for the “Player” profile, its rise in power translates into major cosmetics and / or monetary rewards, but we’ll talk about the economic model in due course.

It’s hard for MultiVersus to compete with 89 Super Smash Bros. fighters. The end. Warner Bros. sure there are dozens and dozens of characters in stock, but only a few of them have been announced so far. However, it should be recognized that the 16 fighters have their own style made with 100% unique combinations and other attacks. The intergenerational roster draws from a wide variety of universes, including DC, Looney Tunes, Game of Thrones, Scooby-Doo, Adventure Time, Steven Universe and The Iron Giant.

Players can choose between Batman, Harley Quinn, Superman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, Taz, Arya Stark, Sammy, Vera, Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, Garnet, Steven Universe, The Iron Giant and Reindeer Dog. The last mentioned character is an original creation of Player First Games. There are even variants, if not purely cosmetic skins, for the fighters I just mentioned. For example, Batman can exchange his emblematic costume for the samurai armor that the class releases. Note that the studies promise to add characters without specifying who and the publication rate.

We can also discuss the different arenas available to players. Currently they are 6 in number and you are allowed to explore the Batcave, the haunted Scooby-Doo Mansion, the TROPHY ROOM, the Lab and finally the Tree House. MultiVersus, as its name suggests, takes pride in the multi space. The game modes on offer therefore go in this direction classic 1v1 and Everyone For Self as well as 2v2 and Co-op vs AI. It adds personal games and finally Le Labo to practice and perfect your technique.

You would have understood this, MultiVersus does not offer a single-player mode per se., but a “with bots” version of the modes we just listed, just to offer a “solo” alternative. In addition, the absence of true local multiplayer should be noted during this Private Alpha. This should be temporary, at least to be expected. A fighting game, and especially a Platform Fighter, without offline Multiplayer can be completely useless for many players. At the end of the online features, the game from Warner Bros. is cross play and cross save allowing you to face the entire community no matter what the medium and move from one platform to another without losing your progress.

MultiVersus is a Free-to-Play. This means microtransactions and a whole host of features designed to entice players to spend their euros. The reward principle is here at the center of the experience envisioned by Player First Games. The more you play, the more you are rewarded. Thus players can get items and earn GOLD by fighting, leveling up and completing various “missions” or objectives. Even eventually they unlock new characters by spending hard-earned GOLD. However, the heart of the economic model of this fighting game is in Battle Pass.

This concept, which is well known by the players, encourages them to face challenges, here called “seasonal levels” in order to pass 50 levels and thus receive the (s). related reward. The fact is that Battle Pass comes in two flavors, one free and the other Premium and therefore paid. The second option, the price of which remains fixed, allows you to get better quality items and especially new skins like the Batman samurai. On paper, no one is forcing players to spend a penny, and the Free to Play approach can allow everyone to test the experience. It can also have the opposite effect and dismiss fans of the genre.

MultiVersus has arguments to make and can boast of offering a fun, robust and accessible experience to everyone. Is that enough to catch the master of Super Smash Bros.? The end? It’s hard to know what it is.
