After a 10-minute presentation made by Player First Games studios, JV’s editorial staff entered the MultiVersus ring during the private Alpha held from May 16 to 18, 2022, and discovered this new combat game. , its roster of warriors. , its various methods as well as its economic model.

The Warner Video Game Multiverse

Aside from NetherRealm’s studio productions (Mortal Kombat and Injustice), fight games rarely rely on their Story mode to stand out from the competition. In general, studios want to focus the game on what is more noble to offer. The First Player Game is of this caliber and completely abandons the narrative dimension. MultiVersus, as the name suggests, is a 100% multiplayer and versus-centric experience.

Here’s a little context for “lore” lovers. For some mysterious reason, some characters from different Warner Bros. teleported to face each other, and that was it. MultiVersus draws from the company’s North American catalog to create a roster of as colorful and eclectic warriors as possible. The cast is cross-generational, let’s say, and should speak to all gamers, although those born in the 80s and 90s should feel privileged. The arenas follow the same logic and take cult areas from different licenses (the Batcave, the Haunted Scooby Manor, the TROPHY ROOM, the Lab, the Tree House, etc.).

A fighting game is also judged within its roster and at this point MultiVersus has yet to compete with its model, even if its qualities need to be recognized. Announced by the warriors, all different and taken from different universes, currently 16 in number. The holy trinity Batman – Superman – Wonder Woman – and Harley Quinn from DC rub shoulders with Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, and Taz from Looney Tunes, but also Arya Stark (Game of Thrones), Sammy and Vera (Scooby-Doo), Finn the Human and Jake the Dog (Adventure Time), Garnet and Steven (Steven Universe) and finally The Iron Giant. Player First Games even created an original character named Dog-Reindeer and promised new warriors.

Purists will enjoy official voices (English only) on the part of the cast. Actress Maisie Williams returned to MultiVersus as Arya Stark, and so did Kevin Conroy, the actor who portrayed Gotham’s vigilante in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992. It is even possible to change the aesthetic appearance of the warriors through different variants to be unlocked. For example, the Dark Knight can wear samurai armor. The artists have even been able to combine all of these universes, albeit remotely themed and visually, thanks to a smooth “3D cartoon” artistic direction that in no way distorts pop-culture images. which are present and yet emphasize their specifics.

A Super Smash Bros-like?

MultiVersus is very inspired by the Super Smash Bros. saga. and it cannot be found in the slightest. Player First Games uses the mechanics of the genre, which in Platform Fighter, retracted, but retained their essence. Many players compete in a closed 2D arena with the intent of eliminating other fighters by inflicting and damaging them. The higher the gauge, the easier the ejection. So the basic principles remain unchanged, even if Warner’s game tries to stand out from the competition thanks to its cooperative dimension.

MultiVersus primarily promotes cooperation. Many of the attacks and other “moves” of the characters are believed to help the teammate or even unite. Sammy will recover. Wonder Woman and Chien-Renne can get someone back in the ring. Batman can hide himself and others under the smokescreen. and so on. For others, the regulars are on familiar ground in the face of nervous and somewhat chaotic confrontations, and most of all fun from the first few moments. Simple and special attack, combination, dodge, jump and fall … the essence of Platform Fighter is respected.

This desire to put team collaboration at the center of the experience is reflected in the presence of modes 2v2 and Co-op against AI where the traditional is added 1v1the Every man for himselfthe usual features and to finish the laboratory, a training area to perfect your technique. All of this is of course playable alone against artificial intelligence. So MultiVersus does not offer any single player mode other than battles with bots. Another lack of size should be noted, although it should be temporary. The Warner Bros. title. currently (during Private Alpha) there are no local multiplayer modes. However, MultiVersus for cross play and cross save, understand here that your progress is transferred from one platform to another.

Player First Games also includes many mechanics from role -playing games. Thus, the more you play with a warrior, the more his skill level will increase which unlocks passive skills to be equipped (or not). These “Perks” provide various bonuses in the arena and should not be neglected. A player with a high level of skill of a character, the maximum is 15, so there is a certain advantage that cannot be exceeded. This Light RPG dimension can be seen in the profile of players who have earned XP, and therefore in the level … with the goal of gaining a variety of common cosmetic items and GOLD.

MultiVersus: The ultimate challenger in Super Smash Bros. The end?

A Free-to-Play experience

MultiVersus is different from Super Smash Bros. Last above all by his economic model. In effect, this new fighting game is Free to Play which means in-app purchases and a whole lot of features, starting with in-game currency and Battle Pass. GOLD, captured in the arena and by performing daily missions, allows among other things to unlock new warriors as well as Assets and even XP boosts, just to unlock at the skill level of the character without a fight.

Battle Pass, on the other hand, encourages players to complete an entire series of challenges called “seasonal levels” with the goal of each with multiple levels, of which there are 50. Each level has the same rewards that vary depending on the type of Battle Pass you own… the free and the Premium. Of course, the second necessary payment offers players more interesting things and especially new skins for the characters. This economic model guarantees access to the most MultiVersus, but may become restrictive over time, and therefore alienate some fans of the genre.

MultiVersus: The ultimate challenger in Super Smash Bros. The end?

Our impressions

MultiVersus may appeal to Platform Fighter fans without a shadow of the master of the genre in which it is strongly inspired… Super Smash Bros. The end. The colorful multiverse of Warner Bros. as well as the fun of the fights as mere arguments in favor of the title created by Player First Games. However, the low list of characters, the (temporary?) Absence of local Multiplayer and the Free to Play dimension can be a deterrent to fight game enthusiasts.
