Me, ugly and good
It’s been a while since Ash Williams put his feet and his huge magic wand into the territories of consoles and PCs. His last truly memorable performance began in 2005 on the PlayStation 2 with him Evil Dead Change, a mindless hack’n’slash beast, who tried to justify buying it in a supposedly canon (but actually not) ghost storyline. The only thing that saved him: Bruce Campbell’s vocal performance, always ready to take on the worst of the worst times.
Unfortunately, the first minutes of playing Evil Dead: The Game brings back straight to this old memory bathed in annoyance. Graphically, the Saber Interactive title is a real visual assault. Not because of the hectoliters of hemoglobin dripping from Cadaverous corpses that Ash and company happily harvested, but because of the graphic charter choices made. The character design is borderline insulting made to the saga created by Sam Raimi.
What are these stumps?
The characters seem to be modeled rushing to a low-end development station. Sure, Evil Dead: The Game not a big AAA blockbuster. But at this point, it’s reasonable to wonder if there has been any creative effort made into character plots. With the exception of Ash, all the heroes seem to have the same face, with the addition of a goatee for the knights, or long hair and lipstick for the female characters.
Added to this is the fact that Technically the game is not eligible to ship the AA or AAA title in 2022. The set is so ugly that it looks like it’s from an end of life PS3 or a sick PS4. The sets are empty, the level design is too lazy, and what about the animations? Aside from the smooth finishing moves, the protagonists, whether demonic or human, roam the screen as if a collection of brooms had been inserted into their foundation.
Serious acne problems
We can try to convince ourselves that a game is not judged by its graphic packaging, but by its content. Even from this point of view, if explored solo, the Saber Interactive title is completely lost. After a mandatory tutorial that does the least, the software offers no campaign or any scripted adventure. Must be satisfied with five less exciting chapters / missions completed in less than six hours.
However, it’s almost incomprehensible, when the urge to turn off your PC or console and leave it all like a bad memory is at its strongest, you’re allowing yourself to be tempted by a multiplayer game. And then a real epiphany happens.
Ready for a good game
If you can imagine that Saber Interactive has been waving its magic wand for almost 2 years to be Evil Dead: The Game, the urge to send them and an army of Corpses through the Necronomicon is almost unstoppable. Just by telling ourselves that we hit the lowest rock, and for the sake of conscience, that we launch multiplayer mode … And everything has changed.
The title is revealed in the simple principle of a asymmetrical multiplayer game, in third person perspectivemodeled in the diagram of a Dead in the Sun. oa Friday the 13th. The battles take place four against one, four players comprising the main protagonists of the trilogy evil Dead and in Ashes against the Evil Dead, and the other became the embodiment of Evil in the person of the Devil of Kandar. The goal is simple: destroy the Necronomicon and take out the demons for heroes, terrorists and massacre the good people for those who choose the dark side of the Force.
That beautiful nipple
It is in this suppression that the title is fully expressed and provides the full potential of the play. For most, the game has metamorphosed: thanks to the concept of struggle as an over-entertainment, gore and stupid survival horror, the game turns a lack of technical knowledge into a crazy and unrestrained one. atmosphere.
With a few friends (online only) on hand, the software can be very addictive : We were amazed at the chain of games for hours. If there is a shortage of players, an AI will replace the left, and note that the title is 100% cross-play and cross-platform, it is best not to run out of reinforcements on the battlefield.
Despite a few different game modes, limited to 5, and multiple sets to fit both hands, the sauce evil Dead take immediately. Players who decide to be on the right side of the fence have a choice in the middle 13 characters in total, from Lord Arthur to Paul to Cherry and Amanda, is divided into four character classes: Team Leader, Warrior, Hunter and Support. Each class has different statistics, attributes and skills, so you need to compose your team accordingly to be effective in combat.
They are dumb and ugly, but very effective
The formula can be very different for lovers of rotten flesh, with a choice between three options: Warchief, Puppeteer and Necromancer, each demon caste has its own magical abilities. The game of these dirty beasts is even more funtheir skills of necromancy and magic can infuriate the way one can be on someone’s skin.
It’s in multiplayer that we also see a lot of work put in by the developers in sound design and in the overall sound design of the game, most of the enemies identify themselves by voice before they are seen. But more, it is the very fact of incorporating the characters in the saga that is a real joy. Hearing Bruce Campbell release “Groovy” was a joy, Dana Delorenzo returned to double Kelly Maxwell, similar to Ray Santiago taking over the role of Pablo Simon Bolivar. A real not even guilty pleasure that will ensure fans hours of pure fanboy orgasm.
Arthur is also there, and is open to only a few missions
too much fan service (and that’s good)
Once again, about his models Dead in the Sun. and Friday the 13thmost of the entertainment comes from being able to dive head first on the license which serves as the breeding ground for the game. Dead In The Sun. enjoyed regularly adding new collaborations, resident evil on silent Hill passeth promoter of hell, Friday the 13th he’s worth it if you play Jason Voorhees (nobody wants to play a permanent victim). Evil Dead The Game there is for him the fact that it tastes as good on the side of pretty good guys / losers as the demons.
And if simple and effective play has a lot to do with it, which areas evil Dead above the competition is its management of fan-service. He is everywhere, all the time. The sets for each mission are straight from the cult sequences in the trilogy: the iconic cabin lost in the jungle inEvil Dead 1 and 2 there, as well as the surrounding forest. Ash’s caravan was in the game, and we enjoyed the ride aboard his beautiful yellow Delta 88.
This one is not owned
The weapons are equally different: it’s with joy that we grab Ash’s boomstick, Kandar’s sword, Arthur’s sword, the hero’s chainsaw, or that we use Ash’s hand mechanics that Paul made in Ash VS Evil Dead. On the side of the demons, the developers pushed the vice until Ash’s cursed hand could be found in the chest so that it would jump down the survivor’s throat with the courage to open it. Sadistic laughter to guarantee satisfaction.
Fan-service is available, everywhere, all the time and devilishly (haha) well distilled. For any self -respecting fan, Evil Dead: The Game is the guarantee of a regressive ecstasy, which eliminates the technical defects of the title. Between the thrilling and unstoppable aspect of Multiplayer games and this crazy atmosphere that has developed in the land of license breeding evil Dead, it’s hard not to go back as long as you appreciate the frankness. As for the hermetic players in Sam Raimi’s films, they go their way without looking back, because no one can save the ship from their eyes.
Evil Dead: The Game has been available since May 13, 2022 on PC, Xbox One and Series, PS4 and PS5, and will soon arrive on the Nintendo Switch. This test was performed using the PC version provided by the publisher
