GeForce RTX 4090: Finally, you don’t need to change your PC’s power supply

Hardware news GeForce RTX 4090: Finally, you don’t need to change your PC’s power supply

Rumors and leaks are rife around Nvidia’s next -generation graphics card. Yesterday we talked about an earlier than expected launch for the GeForce RTX 4070, 4080 and 4090 models. A lot of details have emerged today, especially about the consumption of the 4090. And the news is even better.

While we are still struggling to find the GeForce RTX 30s at decent prices (although the situation is slowly improving), Nvidia is preparing to launch the GeForce RTX 40s. for 4070, 4080 and 4090 models, ie high-end and very high-end.

RTX 4090: lower TGP than expected?

The information should be extracted using tweezers and from the common knowledge @kopite7kim Twitter account. He was the one who, yesterday, announced an earlier than expected launch for the RTX 40s.

For now, the topic is this: these new cards will be powerhouses, offering double the performance of the RTX 30s… But at the cost of a very high TGP. Note that “Total Graphic Power” represents the graphics card’s consumption of watts within the PC and therefore it requires a power supply. The GeForce RTX 3090, for example, has a TGP of 350 watts, which is already one of the highest on the market (the 3080 goes up to 320W and the 3070 to 220W).

The information we have so far suggests a TGP of 600 watts for the RTX 4090, almost double the 3090. Large volume and less reliable, for the planet and for your wallet.

But the conclusion in the end could be more optimistic: still according to @kopite7kim, the GeForce 4090 finally has a lower TGP than expected. The leaker claimed that the next high-end card from Nvidia will have a TGP of 450W. 100W more than 3090, at double the performance: if it was true at the time of release, the performance would be frankly impressive.

A good sculpture can make a difference

For this new generation of RTX 4000 graphics card, Nvidia has changed the way it is carved: the RTX 30s are carved at 8 nm by Samsung, the RTX 40s are carved at 5 nm by TSMC. A change in supplier and a carving skill almost twice as low as, reasonably, could lead to a sharp increase in performance without blowing the energy envelope. Nvidia needs to find the right balance between raw performance gain and reasonable power consumption.

GeForce RTX 40: an announcement during the summer?

Whether it is certain that the GeForce RTX 40 will be released in the coming months, the timing of the announcement is not yet clear. Nvidia regularly takes advantage of Gamescom, around August 20, to present new GPUs. But a presentation at the end of August will not go in the direction of yesterday’s information, which sparked the July launch.

We can envision a presentation during Computex 2022, which will take place in Taipei from May 24 to 27. This hardware -dedicated show is the ideal venue for such an announcement and Nvidia has also announced a conference on May 23 at 8 pm (4 am in France). But there is little chance of announcing the new cards, for the good and simple reason that Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia, will not attend.

And it’s hard to see an announcement of a new generation of GeForce being made without someone accustomed to the stage at every launch of this class. So there’s a good chance that Nvidia will be holding a dedicated event during the summer, garnished from any trade show.
