The Alabama correctional officer and the inmate who went missing six days ago had a one-year relationship that included his driving hours to visit him in the state prison.
Law enforcement officials shared more details about the relationship between Vicky White, 56, and Casey White, 38, as the search continued after their disappearance on April 29, when Vicky White said she was taken the murder suspect from the Lauderdale County Jail.
Casey White is serving a 75-year sentence for multiple violent crimes and has also been charged with capital murder for stabbing to death a 58-year-old woman.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told NBC News correspondent Sam Brock on Thursday that Vicky White repeatedly drove more than two hours to a state jail in Donaldson, Alabama, to see Casey White. (no relationship) for at least two years and possibly longer. »
“He’s here in 2020 for an arraignment and a preliminary hearing, and when he’s done with that, he’s back in state prison,” Singleton said. “We know that they kept in contact while he was in the state prison.»
Alabama state officials told NBC News that any log or video of visits between the two to the state prison “is not yet ready to be released.”
Details of their prison visits come after authorities said Wednesday that the two had a “special relationship” that included regular correspondence and after -hours meeting hours.
White filed his retirement papers a day before the two disappeared, police said. In addition, court records show he sold his house five weeks ago for a price far below the market value of £ 95,000, causing police to fear he could easily make money.
The situation leaves most of White’s former colleagues in disbelief, as he is a four -time Employee of the Year with an impeccable record.
“It can happen to most people,” Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said Thursday. “Vicky White, I trust my life. That kind of person is a solid person. »
Now he has a warrant for his arrest for allowing or aiding White’s escape. Singleton also said Wednesday that he no longer works in the sheriff’s office without saying if he was fired.
The 6ft 9in inmate and the 5ft 5in corrections officer have not been seen since his release from prison last week. New surveillance video from a gas station shows the couple driving on the local road aboard their patrol car. The two left the car for a Ford Edge getaway car that was later found in Florence, Alabama.
Authorities say he could have changed his clothes and appearance and the two could have been armed. Casey White also threatened to kill his ex -girlfriend and his sister if he got out of jail, law enforcement officials told NBC News.
Vicky White owned an AR-15, a shotgun and another pistol as personal weapons, Singleton said.
“But I think the fact that they own it, I think it’s a fair assumption that they’re with them,” he told Brock.
The U.S. Marshals Service says it has unreliable information on which direction the two could be traveling. A deputy commander told Brock that in more than 20 years of work, this is the first case where they are not strong.
