Former Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé discussed Metaverse, blockchain technology and P2E within video games during a panel discussion held at the SXSW Conference.
The interview focuses on Reggie’s journey as a Haitian immigrant from the Bronx, who later attended Cornell University and earned a place at Nintendo after befriending Satoru Iwata.
After discussing the challenges he faced along the way, what he accomplished while at Nintendo of America, and why he quit in 2019 (to teach and join a board), he was interviewed to focus the discussion on another topic: where the video game industry is heading. ?
Reggie Fils-Aimé immediately described the Metaverse as an industry-wide concept, but also shared his own interpretation of what it means for the industry:
“What is Metaverse? I think Metaverse is a bit like the ‘cloud’ of five years ago, and even the ‘Internet’ of 20 years ago. It’s a label that all companies have tried to understand, so they can say that their company is about Metaverse. For me, Metaverse is a virtual space where you can interact with your friends in a social and, I think, game-like environment. So social it, it’s digital… and has the ability to really interact with your friends as well as people who have the potential to be your friends. »
Reggie mentioned Fortnite and Roblox as specific examples of implementing his vision of the Metaverse, which he further enriched as “a wide range of different experiences, each tied to a motto”.
However, he mentioned that he doubts the success of Facebook’s rebranding to Metaverse, because he doesn’t believe Facebook is a new company, and doesn’t have much success with its physical products. He also expressed his preference for augmented reality (AR) technology over virtual reality (VR), citing Pokemon GO as an example of the successful integration of this technology.
Blockchain technology considered in video games
On the subject of blockchain technology, cryptocurrency and P2E (play-to-earn), Reggie would like to state this:
“I rely on the blockchain. I believe blockchain is a really compelling technology… I am also a proponent of the “play to own” concept in video games, and I say as a gamer that one would have invested 50 hours in a game, 100 hours of a game… He even has a few games that I spend 300 hours… And if I’m ready to move on, wouldn’t it be great to monetize what I’ve built? I’ll bet I’ll have some to take if I decide to sell my island now Animal Crossing… I wish I could monetize that. Integrating blockchain technology into code and development enables me to do just that. »
However, he qualified his positive comments about the potential of blockchain technology in games by saying that it needs to be reasonable for gamers, not just for game developers to make a profit.
And you? Do you agree with Reggie’s optimistic view of Metaverse and blockchain technology in gaming? And are you ready to participate in the island auction Animal Crossing is Reggie?
