Apple is already planning the future of photography on its iPhone 15

Hardware news Apple is already planning the future of photography on its iPhone 15

While the new iPhone 14s is expected for the start of the 2022 school year, Apple is already working on the photo part of its iPhone 15s, which is set for 2023. We can expect a telephoto lens to be able to see too far away.

  • A lengthy set up process
  • What is a periscopic telephoto lens?

Since the iPhone X was released in 2017, Apple has always incorporated a telephoto lens into the back of its mobile terminals. At the time, this sensor primarily benefited from portrait mode, but over time, the proposal expanded. Like many smartphone manufacturers, Apple hasn’t hesitated to go one-upmanship on some aspects of its devices, to stand out from the competition. And on the question of the telephoto lens, the Cupertino company is late: difficult for the iPhone 13 Pro Max and its x3 optical zoom to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s proposed x10 optical zoomor even x100 digital zoom on the same device.

Korean site The Elec reports thatApple is now in talks with supplier Jahwa Electronics to later offer a new photo modulewith a vision to equip its terminals by 2023. Jahwa is far from unknown in the sector: it is, oh surprisingly, Samsung suppliers for the entire Galaxy S22 range.

Apple would have asked Jahwa Electronics to build new assembly lines at its factories. The American company is accustomed to doing this to its partners, especially to avoid information leaks (missed, obviously). The contract between Apple and Jahwa amounts to 191 billion won, or an estimated 143 million euros. That was added to the site “OIS sensors made in the new assembly lines are likely intended for telephoto lenses” company equipment.

A lengthy set up process

Laying up the assembly lines for Apple would have to take several more months, which would allow Jahwa Electronics to start supplying Apple “from the second quarter of next year”. A timing equivalent to when the iPhone 15 range will enter production.

So it seems to prove that this collaboration has nothing to do with the iPhone 14, terminals that we already know a lot about. We will also remember that from 2020, Analyst Ming Chi Kuo predicts the arrival of a periscopic telephoto lens on the next generation iPhone : at the time, 2022 was mentioned, but it probably won’t be for this year.

What is a periscopic telephoto lens?

The principle of the telescopic telephoto lens is similar to that of the submarine periscope : light enters the lens, and a mirror arranged at an angle of 90 ° is present to reflect it. Then it reaches the sensor located at the top to take a picture. The particularity of the system should be horizontalleaving him more space to work: the depth of the device no longer limits the installation of a large zoom.

This type of technology has been used for many years by OPPO, Huawei and even Samsung: it is not new but could greatly improve Apple’s photo proposition.

The horizon of 2023 seems almost here for Apple and its iPhone 15, while the iPhone 14 is already on track to be considered a generation of iOS terminals that is less recent compared to the iPhone 13.. This may make brand enthusiasts want to wait another year before replacing devices.
