How the education sector is changing itself thanks to digital

The health crisis is shifting students as experienced online course teachers. From elementary to higher education through professional training, everyone needs to master videoconferencing software and online platforms. At a time when pandemics seem to be on the rise, digital solutions such as new tools are taking root in the field of education.

Crisis challenges are turned into opportunities

If the digitalization of the education sector had already begun before Covid-19, the current health crisis is accelerating the process. Physical and social isolation, loneliness… In the last two years, digital transformation has become significant. Short-term courses need to be reconsidered to limit the impact of the crisis on learning health. Many schools, universities and training institutions then went digital. Video communication software such as Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Blackboard integrate the daily lives of teachers, speakers and students. Everyone is accustomed to sharing documents from a drive or digital platform like Dropbox.

The health crisis of spring 2020 and the closure of high schools is forcing us to rethink and change our pedagogy. In fact, a couple of weeks before our Easter courses, the Paris schools with which we worked, such as Fénelon Sainte-Marie or Stanislas, did not accept us.

That’s why we need to think of an alternative that is effective and qualitative: there is no question of leaving our students. So we inaugurated our first online courses, where we learned lessons to improve.

In this sense we left the touch pad courses for a proposal of online sessions on a real board, in our studios consisting of 14 classrooms fully equipped with 4K.

At the same time, we made our Prepa Medicine offered throughout online: As it is now, our online courses are no longer an alternative to overcoming face-to-face, they are a real training offer that everyone can respond to! » Edouard Morice, Thalès Course Director and Associate Professor of Physics

Organization, adaptation, new way of communication… For teachers and students, this time is not always easy. However, it presents as an opportunity to rethink educational approaches by promoting accessibility. For this, many establishments and individuals who want to practice in a discipline opt for online sites or platforms. These companies, which specialize in educational technologies (EdTech), aim to shake up the traditional view of teaching and learning. There are some for learning a language (Babbel, Duolingo, Lingumi), finding a private tutor (MyTutor, SuperProf, GoStudent, etc.) or for training in a fun way (360Learning). In France, the number of EdTech companies is estimated at nearly 400 to 500.

These new learning habits have become permanent. Today, many establishments have adopted the hybrid mode. In terms of training, they are almost systematically offered online and face-to-face. Prior to the health crisis, EdTech’s market potential was nearly $ 325 billion for 2025. Today, estimates range from 400 to 500 billion, of which 50 to 90 billion are dedicated to the opportunity of this unique crisis. .

Relying on new technologies

To keep up with the digital transformation, some players in the education sector are adopting advanced technologies such as virtual reality (VR). It allows for example to visualize regions of the world or objects from a classroom or at home. This solution addresses current challenges: offering more interactions during learning. According to consulting firm IDC, the growth rate of the virtual reality market will reach 200% between 2019 and 2023 in the field of training.

At the same time, augmented reality (AR) is also evolving in the world of education. Applications that use this technology make it possible to visualize abstract concepts, tell stories in a more fun way and better understand details, especially in science or engineering.

Finally, cloud solutions are also growing. They offer students and trainers the ability to connect anywhere. They can use this type of application whether they are face to face, at home or in another country. During the pandemic, many educators opted for cloud platforms to upload their videos, assignments, projects and other content.

The health crisis underscores the importance of new technologies in a sector with some gaps. They are gradually anchored in the field of education by shaking up teaching habits and ethics. Each of them aims to facilitate access to certain training courses, to transform learning and make courses more interactive, face-to-face and online.
